Join Brisbears at our Sunday Social held the first Sunday of every month at the Brunswick Hotel.  This is a very casual gathering, and allow people to gather, mix and mingle with each other, and just have a nice afternoon in the bear garden while listening to a chilled set by Daryl Murphy.  This is an inclusive event and is open to all bears, their admirers and friends. Please join Brisbears for Bearwatch! Pop on your favourite swimsuit and party the night away with DJ Davide DC spinning the decks until late.  Doors will open at 8pm. From 8-9pm we will be having a quiet hour to allow newcomers the chance to meet and take in the space. Bar service and tunes will commence at 9pm. Mr Bear Qld 2024 Competition Tonight, Brisbears brings you the main event - The Mr Bear QLD 2024 Competition. Join us and cheer on your favourite bear, who will compete over 3 rounds for the coveted title of Mr Bear QLD 2024. More than just a beauty pageant, the winner will be our Brisbears figurehead, a charity champion and our representative at Southern Hibearnation for 2024. Along with our judges who are well respected members of the bear community you will have your opportunity to vote for your favourite bear too. To get you warmed up on the dance floor our DJ will be none other than local legend Buzz William, who will take you right through till close. It truly will be a night to remember. This event can be purchased as part of the Season Pass or can be purchased separately.

The award-winning Balls OUT Bingo Brisbane has been a huge success for the now for many years. Many a bear has graced the stage as a ball boy.  Game Books are $15 and can be purchased on the night. Please join Brisbears for a special screening of the documentary Shape, directed by Roger Ungers. Snacks will be included as part of your admission fee. There will also be a bar available for you to grab your favourite refreshments for the screening.  ‘Shape’ examines how social media, gay targeted advertising, gay networking/hook-up apps such as Grindr and the gay clubbing scene can foster an obsession with the “ideal body”. Through interviews with a diverse range of subjects, interwoven with expert opinion, ‘Shape’ explores many of the defining factors that influence gay men to obsess over their looks and the negative repercussions of this harmful mindset. The film’s subjects reflect on their personal experiences of body image-based discrimination and dissect their own beliefs, while exploring what needs to happen to create a more inclusive gay community. Two characters will provide fascinating insights on alternative body image ideals within the Bear and Drag communities. The gay community purports to celebrate diversity, inclusivity and equality, but body image discrimination is rife, and is inextricably linked to racism, ageism and femmephobia. ‘Shape’ unpacks how being in a “tribe” can help gay males feel part of a community. This sense of inclusion can be so valuable, especially for young males whose family may have rejected them after they come out. But this social grouping can actually lead to unhealthy stereotypes and unrealistic body image ideals. Self-objectification of the body in the gay community is by no means a new issue, however we are seeing an increase in feelings of unworthiness, shame, mental health issues and marginalisation among gay men. Conversations around these topics need to be amplified if we truly want to see social change. By watching ‘Shape’, the audience will come to more deeply understand what it means to be a gay man in a world that places a sometimes dangerously high priority on the way you look. Ultimately, the film will uncover how we can have a more positive outlook towards ourselves and each other in relation to body image.
